Obit of the Day: Founder of City Museum

City Museum in St. Louis may be unlike any other museum in the United States, if not the world. It has a ferris wheel on the roof. Inside there is a large tank of water that splashes visitors and is called the “puking pig.” A ten story slide takes up part of the interior. Outside a “Blade Runner”-like climbing area called MonstroCity (“monstrocity”) allows children and adults to climb into a plane and a precariously positioned bus. For the less adventurous, there is the Museum of Mirth, Mayhem and Mystery, a museum within the museum, that features the “World’s Largest Pair of Underwear” and the “World’s Largest No. 2 Pencil.”

Bob Cassilly and his wife opened up City Museum in 1997 with a mission “[t]o reawaken the childlike imagination, joy and sense of wonder in all of us.” It now welcomes over 630,000 visitors a year.

Cassilly built his child-centered museum with a child-like sense of what would entertain and spur creativity. At one point he fired the museum’s entire board of directors because he felt the museum was becoming too traditional with its “bogus craft projects.”

Unfortunately the desire for adventure on Mr. Cassilly’s part had consequences and City Museum patrons have filed dozens of lawsuits after injuring themsekves during a visit.. But it has not stopped the crowds from pouring into the attraction.

Mr. Cassilly died tragically while driving a bulldozer at his newest outdoor playground, Cementland, which was to open soon. He was 61.
